Year 1988 was a benchmark year for Rolex launched the new line of Daytona Reference 16520. From a case size 38mm case with manually wind movement and plexi crystal to a new 40mm case with crown guards, a sapphire crystal and automatic movement. The automatic calibre was based on the Zenith El Primero which was modified by Rolex and given the calibre reference 4030. The watch was a huge success and so began the Daytona phenomenon that is still very much alive today especially the present watch with the earliest porcelain dial with floating “Cosmograph” print. This MK1 porcelain dial is extremely well preserved and very rare to come by. They were only in production for approximately one year fitted with the original 200 bezel. The reference 16520 stands a bridge symbolizing Rolex’s evolution from “vintage”, when parts were outsourced, to the modern era. Relative to today’s fervent vintage Rolex market, the reference 16520 actually enjoys a steady growth on pricing, although if compared with modern Daytona, such as the reference 116520, or even the reference 116500, its price may be on the high side. However, the amazing part for this particular reference is that you can still enjoy the hunting for one in a well-preserved condition with special distinctive elements on the dial and bezel.
