The time of the 1970s was a great change for the watch industry, where the concept of a luxury watch in steel was a truly revolutionary idea. Royal Oak ‘A-series’ watches from the early 1970s are highly-sought by collectors, owing to their rarity and unique place within the brand’s history. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta, the reference 5402 as the first Royal Oak is often referred to as ‘Jumbo’ as it was relatively imposing size in that period. It is an all-purpose watch that fits perfectly for different occasions, ranging from daily use to formal occasions. The original release of the reference 5402 in 1972 consisted of a run of 1,000 pieces. Watches from this first run are referred to as ‘A-series’ as the engraved serial numbers on the caseback began with the letter A. Later on, Audemars Piguet produced another 1,000 pieces of the A-series and continued with consecutive B, C, and D series. Among all the executions of the ref. 5402, the early A-series are considered the most collectible due to the short production run.
